Deep well injection

Injection is the route for aqueous waste in quantities that make anything else uneconomic. It is also the route with the narrowest entry criteria on this site, and the one most often ruled out by something as mundane as suspended solids.

It is containment, and the geology is the container

A Class I hazardous waste injection well places liquid waste into a permeable formation thousands of feet down, isolated from drinking water sources by confining rock, under a permitting program concerned with exactly one question: whether the waste can migrate. The waste is not destroyed; it is put somewhere it is expected to stay. That makes injection excellent for high-volume, low-solids aqueous streams and unsuitable for almost everything else. Solids plug the formation, so suspended matter is a disqualifier rather than a surcharge. Reactivity and precipitation on mixing matter, because incompatible streams that meet downhole can do damage that cannot be undone. A stream is accepted on compatibility testing, not on a code alone.

What goes this way

The streams deep well injection handles, and what each one is under the rules — with acceptance decided by a profile rather than by a name on a drum.

  • By compatibility

    High-volume aqueous hazardous waste

Process water and rinse water in quantities where handling cost dominates.

  • D002

Spent acids and caustics after neutralization

Where the neutralized stream is low in solids and compatible with the receiving formation.

  • Varies

    Organic-bearing wastewater

Aqueous streams carrying dissolved organics that would be expensive to incinerate as water.

When this is not the right route

The cases where deep well injection is not what you want, and what to use instead.

What you get back

The records deep well injection produces, and what each one is evidence of — because the liability for a waste stays with the generator from the moment it is created until it is destroyed.

  1. Compatibility test results

The acceptance testing for the specific well, which is what the decision rests on here rather than a code. It also records the solids result that most often decides whether a stream is taken at all.

  2. Acceptance record

Written confirmation that the stream was accepted for injection, and on what basis, so a repeat shipment is not a fresh negotiation.

  3. Manifest and injected volumes

The signed manifest with the quantities actually taken.

Before you ask for a price

What generators ask about deep well injection, answered from the rules rather than from marketing copy.

It is a heavily permitted activity built around isolating waste from drinking water sources, with mechanical integrity testing and monitoring attached to the well. The honest framing is that it is containment: the waste continues to exist, in a place chosen and monitored for the purpose.

Most often solids. Suspended matter plugs the receiving formation, so a stream that is otherwise ideal can be refused on a filterable solids result. Filtration upstream sometimes converts a rejection into an acceptance.

No. Beyond the physical criteria, injection of restricted hazardous waste is governed by its own requirements, and acceptance is based on compatibility testing for the specific well. It is the least generic destination on this site.

Describe the stream. We will tell you the route.

A description of the process and a rough quantity is enough to start. A Certified Hazardous Materials Manager reads every request, and sometimes the answer is a different service than the one you asked about.
