Flatbed trailer transport

Some waste is not a material, it is an object. A transformer, a process vessel, a pallet of poles or a piece of decommissioned plant cannot go through the doors of a trailer, and the flatbed exists for exactly that.

Loaded from above, secured from every side

An enclosed trailer is loaded by rolling something in through one end. A flatbed is loaded by putting something down onto it, usually with a crane or a heavy forklift, which changes what the job needs: lifting points, a lift plan, ground that will take the crane, and somebody to receive the item at the other end. Securement then becomes the whole engineering problem, because there is no body holding the load in — chains, straps, blocking and dunnage are doing that work, and how an item is secured depends on its shape and center of gravity rather than on a standard pattern. For waste specifically there is one more consideration that catches people out: an item still containing fluid is a container as well as a load, and an old transformer with oil in it is both an oversized haul and a potential PCB question.

What goes this way

The streams flatbed trailers handles, and what each one is under the rules — with acceptance decided by a profile rather than by a name on a drum.

  • TSCA where applicable

    Transformers and electrical equipment

Where fluid remains, the PCB determination governs the route as much as the size does.

  • By residue

    Tanks and process vessels

Decommissioned plant, with the cleaning status decided before it is lifted.

  • D004 / D007

    Treated poles and timber

Removed utility poles, classified by the preservative that treated them.

  • Varies

    Oversized scrap and equipment

Anything that will not fit through a trailer door and has to be craned on.

When this is not the right route

The cases where flatbed trailers is not what you want, and what to use instead.

What you get back

The records flatbed trailers produces, and what each one is evidence of — because the liability for a waste stays with the generator from the moment it is created until it is destroyed.

  1. Lift and securement record

How the item was lifted and secured, which on an oversized load is the engineering record rather than a formality — there is no trailer body holding it in, so chains, blocking and center of gravity are the whole of the safety case.

  2. Residue and status documentation

What remained inside a vessel or a transformer when it moved, including the PCB determination where equipment carried fluid.

  3. Delivery confirmation

Receipt at the destination, with the manifest where the item traveled as waste.

Before you ask for a price

What generators ask about flatbed trailers, answered from the rules rather than from marketing copy.

Lifting is normally arranged alongside the haul rather than assumed either way, and it needs settling before the date. Ground bearing for the crane is the item most often overlooked.

Not necessarily, but its PCB status has to be established before it moves, because that decides the paperwork, the destination and what a spill during transport would mean.

Sometimes, and the residue inside it is part of the shipment when it is. Establishing what remains in the vessel is part of the profile rather than an afterthought.

Describe the stream. We will tell you the route.

A description of the process and a rough quantity is enough to start. A Certified Hazardous Materials Manager reads every request, and sometimes the answer is a different service than the one you asked about.
